We were aiming to do a circular walk, but the only other safe crossing of the A3 was where it goes under in a tunnel under Hindhead. That is quite a way south, so in order to keep the length of our walk manageable, we only did a tiny section of the Greensands Way, as far as Lower House. If you’re doing the Greensands Way in a hurry, this isn’t the best option – but we are in no hurry at all, and the we enjoyed the opportunity to return to the beautiful Punchbowl.
The walk south was very pleasant. There were nice views on the drive up to the pretty Emley Farm owned by the National Trust. However, we found out very few interesting facts to share with you.
The paths up to Gibbet Hill are confusing, but we did eventually manage to find the monument and we had our lunch enjoying the views towards Gatwick and the North Downs. Both this area and the path round the Punchbowl back to Thursley have lots of interesting facts… but they are all already recorded on the page about our earlier walk in this area!
We’d intended to walk north past Hedge Farm and Haybarn, but we accidentally found ourselves on the to Ridgeway Farm. We’d been here before, but the river valley is pretty with a little footbridge and a ford so we didn’t mind. And the route back to the car park took us through the grounds of Dye House which were very pleasant.
This route was just over 8 miles. It is on map OL33.
